Aurora Single Mom of 2 Breaks Barriers in Construction

Colorado’s construction industry is facing a serious labor shortage, leaving employers struggling to find qualified workers. BuildStrong Academy, founded by Oakwood Homes, is stepping in to meet that challenge by offering hands-on training, career coaching, and direct job placement for adults seeking new opportunities.

One success story is Sandra Stevens, a 42-year-old single mother of two from Aurora. Three years ago, she left retail work to pursue a career in construction. Through BuildStrong Academy’s free training programs, she gained the skills and confidence to become a construction estimator, earning two promotions in just three years. Sandra now reads blueprints, estimates materials and labor, and has carved out a career in what was once an intimidating, male-dominated field.

Sandra’s journey reflects the growing impact of BuildStrong Academy, where women now make up nearly 30% of students. The Academy continues to expand its reach, moving to a new home at the Community College of Aurora to provide even more people with access to life-changing training and career opportunities. Sandra’s advice to others: “You’re stronger than you believe you are, and one brave step can change your life.”
